The Dover Bay Dolphins see, now, what they can do when they step up their game.
Dover’s senior AAA boys’ basketball team came back to defeat the G.P. Vanier Towhees 56-46 on Tuesday night at the Dover Bay Secondary School gym.
Dover trailed by 10 at halftime and was still down by six after three quarters, but a 16-0 run in the fourth quarter settled the outcome.
“After the first half we realized we had to step things up both defensively and offensively and actually want to win,” said Wes Richardson, Dolphins player.
To go on a 16-0 run it takes focus at both ends of the court, and Dover was able to do that.
“It’s easy, because if you’re doing well on offence it goes hand in hand, because you’re so pumped and that gets steals, and more offence,” Richardson said.
Mike Pereira led Dover with 17 points and Richardson scored 13.
In senior AA boys’ action Tuesday, the Woodlands Eagles visited the Cedar Spartans and won 81-43. Bryson Cox scored 31 points and Aaron Halsall added 21 points and 17 rebounds.
Another all-Nanaimo matchup saw the Wellington Wildcats defeat the Nanaimo District Islanders in senior AA boys’ league play at the Wellington school gym. Scoring statistics were not available.
That game was part of a doubleheader, as Wellington’s girls hosted ND’s girls in senior AA action. The ’Cats won 68-33 even though they were missing some key players to injury.
“The girls got a workout,” said Nicole McRae, Wildcats coach. “Usually we don’t need to play anybody for extended periods of time but last night we had to.”
Taelar Keir scored a game-high 16 points, Sara Simovic added 14 points and Kaitlyn Franklin pulled down eight rebounds. For NDSS, Maddy Dawson and Danya Nieman were the top scorers.
Tuesday night’s closest game was a senior AA girls’ matchup at Woodlands Secondary School, where the host Eagles lost 45-43 to the Kwalikum Kondors. Michelle Berti and T.J. Andjelkovic scored 12 points apiece to lead the Eagles.
