The Nanaimo Clippers announced today (Sept. 7) that Jamie Collins is the new team captain.

The forward from Fergus, Ont., is in his second year with the team.

“Jamie’s the classic leader by example…” said Mike Vandekamp, Clippers coach. “He’s the hardest-working guy on the team. He plays a hard game, competes hard every day, [has] great habits and leads by example. And I think he’s got a strong enough personality and a strong enough level of confidence to be able to handle the role of being captain, which isn’t always easy for players at this level.”

Collins is 19 years old but in his final season of junior eligibility and has an NCAA Div. 1 scholarship to Clarkson University for 2018-19. Last season, Collins played in all 58 games for the Clippers and scored 11 goals and 24 points.

Vandekamp said scoring stats don’t really correlate to the captaincy, but thinks Collins will be able to put up good offensive numbers through hard work on the ice.

“You hope that you see it kind of pay off a little bit more statistically for him, because he wants that, too,” the coach said.

The Clippers announced that forward Tristan Crozier and defenceman Jordan Wharrie will be alternate captains.

GAME ON … The Nanaimo Clippers open the 2017-18 B.C. Hockey League season at home against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs on Friday (Sept. 8) at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena. Look for a season preview article later today at www.nanaimobulletin.com/sports.
