The Nanaimo Clippers have seen that games don’t often come down to just five-on-five hockey, so they need to be ready for all situations on the ice.

The city’s B.C. Hockey League team was planning to work on special teams at practice this week as it gets ready for back-to-back home games Friday and Saturday (Oct. 6-7) at Frank Crane Arena against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and Victoria Grizzlies, respectively.

The Clippers are coming off a pair of one-goal losses last weekend against the Bulldogs and Vernon Vipers in which the opponents had better success with penalty kills and power plays.

“Obviously special teams is one of the huge takeaways from this [past] weekend,” said Jamie Collins, Clippers captain. “We have to stay out of the box, obviously, but we also have to capitalize on our power play. We had a lot of chances on our power play and we didn’t really capitalize as much as we should have.”

He said the Clippers generally know what they want to do on their special teams units, but might have to look at different ways of better executing those concepts.

“We’re re-evaluating this week and see what we can do…” he said. “We all know what to do, we’re just looking to start fresh.”

GAME ON … The Clippers host the Bulldogs on Friday at 7 p.m. and then take on the Grizzlies on Saturday at 6 p.m. For tickets, visit www.nanaimoclippers.com or call 250-751-0593.
