Clippers add depth at deadline

The Nanaimo Clippers traded for defenceman Brock Maschmeyer and forward Aaron Hadley and signed forwards Corey Renwick and Garrett Brandsma.

The B.C. Hockey League’s trade deadline came and went Thursday and will mean new-look rosters around the league.

The Nanaimo Clippers were able to add four players to their roster while subtracting two. The Clips traded for defenceman Brock Maschmeyer and forward Aaron Hadley and signed forwards Corey Renwick and Garrett Brandsma.

Maschmeyer comes to the Clips from the Fort McMurray Oil Barons in exchange for forward Kevin Miller and future considerations. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound Maschmeyer was runner-up for Defenceman of the Year in the Alberta Junior Hockey League the last two seasons. He has played just 15 games for the Oil Barons this season, scoring one goal to go with four assists.

Hadley was acquired in a trade with the Vernon Vipers in exchange for future considerations. The 6-foot-3, 200 pounder was third on the Vipers in scoring this season with 12 goals and eight assists in 33 games. He also served as captain of Team Canada West at the World Junior A Hockey Challenge earlier this season.

Renwick, a 17-year-old, had eight goals and 10 assists in 32 games this season with the junior B Nanaimo Buccaneers. In his last game with the Bucs last Saturday at Frank Crane Arena, he scored both the tying and game-winning goals in a 4-3 victory.

Brandsma, a 19-year-old, played 32 games with the Cougars this season, scoring 27 goals and adding 14 assists.

Goaltender Jarrod Schamerhorn was released to the junior B Beaver Valley Nightawks of the Kootenay league.
