Two of Nanaimo’s high school basketball senior teams get to finish off their seasons in style – with berths at provincials.
The Cedar Spartans senior A girls and the Wellington Wildcats senior AA girls tip off their final tournaments of the season on Wednesday (March 7).
Cedar’s provincial tournament is in Prince George.
“The girls are excited to go. It’s an experience that they will remember forever and that’s the most important thing, is that they’re up there having that experience,” said Launa Gannon, the team’s co-coach. “We’ll see how we manage.”
Cedar placed second at Island championships Feb. 24-26 at Cedar Community Secondary School. Megan Cawthorne and Cathy Jordan were chosen as tournament all-stars.
Gannon said the team's offensive game has improved of late as the Spartans have worked on their shooting. The team's game plan has been effective.
"Depending on our veteran players has brought the team to those wins," said the coach. "The girls have come together as a team and I'm really looking forward to having them do well up there."
Wellington plays its provincial tourney in Kamloops, starting with a game Wednesday against Abbotsford Christian. The ’Cats qualified on the strength of a second-place finish at Island championships in Victoria.
Nanaimo's last senior boys' basketball team standing, the Dover Bay Dolphins, saw the season come to an end this past weekend at Island championships in Duncan. Dover was eliminated Friday in 61-51 loss to the Ballenas Whalers.
