Young softball players learned more about the right way to play the game, thanks to some high-level instruction.

Nanaimo’s Caged Athletics hosted a girls’ softball camp at Ladysmith’s Holland Creek Park on Sept. 24-25. The camp was led by Canadian national team player and Olympian Emma Entzminger, with help from Caged Athletics coaches and guest pitching coach Allie Pellizzaro.

More than 85 players attended the camp.

“Just to be able to have an Olympic bronze medallist being able to come to our camp and lend some knowledge, expertise and experience to all these girls was just amazing,” said Joey Sabo, co-owner of Caged Athletics.

Players worked on hitting, fielding, pitching and baserunning in the mornings and scrimmaged in the afternoons. Caged Athletics owners are more experienced with baseball, and Sabo said while there are some “definite differences” between the games, particularly pitching, there are “a ton of similarities,” too.

He said the softball players who participated in the camp got better, had a good time, and impressed coaches.

“There’s some extremely talented softball players on the Island,” Sabo said.
