The Kocher Classic wasn’t close, but it benefited both teams.

The Barsby Bulldogs defeated the NDSS Islanders 54-0 in junior varsity action Wednesday at John Barsby Community Secondary School’s Canem Field.

"I liked the way our team played," said Hayden Gullins, Bulldogs offensive lineman. "I liked how we ran with the ball, how we threw the ball … No points scored on our defence. I think we have a lot more potential down the road, but so far, so good."

Kyle Vollet scored four touchdowns, catching two TDs and rushing for two more. Quarterback Brody Taylor was 9-for-14 for three TDs and 139 yards and had a rushing major. Brandon Parker and Duc Truong caught TD passes and North Rainey had Barsby's other touchdown on a run play. Defensively, Bryce Edwards made 10 tackles and Tyler Harvey picked up two quarterback sacks.

The Isles took moral victories out of their positive plays and were happy to survive the physical challenge of playing the Bulldogs. On the other end of the sideline, Barsby was glad to get a chance to get playing time for all their guys.

"Every link on our chain got thicker; we have a more solid team," Gullins said.

GRID BITS … The football focus at both schools is now shifted to the varsity level, as the Barsby AA varsity team and the NDSS Tier 2 varsity team both play home openers on Friday (Oct. 7) at 1:45 p.m. at their respective school fields.
