The Buccaneers keep blowing away the competition.

Nanaimo’s Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League team won its seventh straight game Thrusday, clobbering the Oceanside General 8-2.

“Another good performance by the boys there,” said Christian Brandt, Bucs assistant coach. “The first period wasn’t really what we were hoping to see, but as the game progressed, the boys started rolling, we started rolling lines and we started burying goals.”

Nanaimo led 2-0 after one period and then 7-1 after 40 minutes. The Bucs were able to win races against the Generals, as is happening against a lot of opponents.

“With our speed, I think we find that just as long as we move our feet, we generate offensive chances, we generate power plays,” Brandt said. “We’ve got a really fast group, a really offensive group and they’ve got a really unique way of just putting the pucks in the net.”

Mathieu Jallabert, who added four points to his league-leading total, credited his team’s high-scoring ways to a simple mindset.

“We’re trying to get pucks to the net,” he said. “To score goals, you need to have pucks on net, so we like to crash hard to the net when the puck’s shot and get open.”

Jallabert had two goals and two assists and Jayden Schubert and Clayton Peace had two goals and an assist each. Owen Dalman and Noah Kelly were other scorers for Nanaimo. Derek Krall made 34 saves for the win in goal.

Nanaimo (8-1) is in first place in the VIJHL.

“It’s really fun to come to the rink,” Brandt said. “All the boys are really happy to be here and it’s really exciting times.”

GAME ON … The Bucs visit the last-placed Comox Valley Glacier Kings on Saturday (Oct. 7) up Island. Next home action is Thursday (Oct. 12) when the Peninsula Panthers visit the NIC for a 7:15 p.m. faceoff.
