Best baseball teams battle

Nanaimo Pirates pitcher Kenton Schroter throws to home plate during this past Saturday’s doubleheader at Serauxmen Stadium.

The Hub City Paving Pirates will put their six-game win streak on hold and play a slate of exhibition games in Parksville this weekend. They won’t lose focus, though – they want to win the B.C.’s Best tournament, just like every other team.

“It doesn’t matter what level the tournament is, whether it’s a prospects tournament or an evaluation tournament or just a house league tournament, kids love tournaments,” said Doug Rogers, Pirates manager. “It doesn’t matter if they’re 10 years old or 18 years old.”

B.C.’s Best is always a high-calibre affair. In addition to the B.C. Premier Baseball League entries, there are three teams from Alberta participating this year.

“Again, it’s time to get some other players into our lineup and get them innings and get the team better as a whole, not just nine guys,” Rogers said.

GAME ON … Nanaimo opens the tournament Friday (May 20) at 12:30 p.m. against the Edmonton Prospects, then faces the Abbotsford Cardinals at 3 p.m. On Saturday Nanaimo takes on the Vancouver Cannons at 3 p.m. and on Sunday the Pirates play the Victoria Mariners at 2:30 p.m. All games will be played at Springwood Park.
