Battlefield brings new MMA main event

A new combatant has agreed to enter the Battlefield.

Kelowna's Clay Davidson will now take on California's Jesse "J.T. Money" Taylor in the main event of Battlefield Fight League: Invasion this Saturday (March 26) in Nanaimo.

BFL was forced to find a new opponent for Taylor on short notice last week after scheduled headliner Denis Kang was hurt training for his fight.

The main event will now be a 202-pound catchweight bout to make it a fairer match between the former UFC fighter Taylor and the larger Davidson.

Nanaimo Impact trainer John Punt said Taylor, a skilled wrestler, is favoured to win, but pointed out that anything can happen in MMA.

"[Davidson] is definitely resilient," Punt said. "He's a tough guy and he'll have size, as well."

As for the Impact athletes on the card, they've been training "full bore", Punt said.

"We're tapering this week and staying healthy and getting ready for the weekend."

Locals competing include Graham Spencer, Darcy James, Ryan Ballingall, Rachael Swatez, Mike Ironside and Dwayne Ganderton.

The promotion is advertising that the popular Lower Mainland fighter will be in attendance at Saturday's show to meet fans, and that he will headline the May 28 show at Frank Crane Arena. In addition, BFL has announced that fans who hang onto their ticket stubs from this weekend's card will receive a 15 per cent discount on the same seat at the May 28 event.
