The Border Battle Cup was finally wrested from the Barsby Bulldogs.
The Ballenas Whalers edged their neighbours 35-34 in AA varsity football action on Friday night at Merle Logan Field for their first win over the ’Dawgs in more than a decade.
Despite gaining 390 rushing yards, Barsby needed a touchdown with a minute left to get to within one point. The Bulldogs tried a two-point conversion for the win but were stuffed.
Justis MacKay-Topley scored four touchdowns for the Bulldogs and gained 258 rushing yards.
In the first half of the high school football doubleheader, the Nanaimo District Islanders were shut out 42-0 by the Hugh Boyd Trojans.
GAME ON … Barsby hosts the Frank Hurt Hornets in league play Friday (Sept. 30) at 2 p.m. at Merle Logan Field, while NDSS plays an exhibition at 7 p.m. that night at Merle Logan against the Westsyde Whundas.
