Re: Compassion, humanity needed in drug crisis, Letters, Jan. 3.
Currently, I’m a recovering heroin addict residing at Nanaimo Correctional Centre, a medium-security work camp for privileged inmates.
I am utterly appalled at this letter. Why he says “no more support if the person reverts to illicit drug use” is beyond me. It sickens me to believe he thinks this inhuman suggestion to be a solution.
This “antidote” you mention is saving lives every day. We are fortunate to have this life-saving, sometimes life-changing remedy on hand. Whether the addict continues to use or seek the professional help they may have needed is honestly no one’s business.
Don’t forget, this epidemic has mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers all suffering equally. It doesn’t matter what side of the fence you live on, addict or not. All lives matter. Remember this next time you read or write about those who suffer with a mental illness such as addiction.
