Veterans appreciate remembrance

Never in all my time since the war have I received recognition like that.

To the Editor,

I am a Second World War veteran (Navy, four years) and my vehicle is therefore carrying ‘veteran’ licence plates.

Last week I was shopping at the Real Canadian Superstore in north Nanaimo and when I came out I found a piece of paper under one of the windshield wipers. For a moment I thought I had received some kind of a ticket but I was wrong. It was simply a scrap of paper and written on one side were the words ‘Thanks, veteran. God bless you.’

To say that I was shocked would be an understatement – I read those words over and over again. It was so spontaneous I believe I was almost in tears. Never in all my time since the war have I received recognition like that.

I am hoping that the author of that note will accept, through your paper, not only my deep appreciation, but also that of all veterans, for this very thoughtful and kind remembrance. It is particularly poignant at this time of year.
