Taxpayers deserve say on spending

Re: No referendum on water borrowing, June 30.

To the Editor,

Re: No referendum on water borrowing, June 30.

It is bad enough for an institution that has no responsibility to raise the money to pay for its ‘orders’, but it is outrageous for council to rescind the referendum.

If ever there was an important time for Nanaimo to ask its poor taxpayers if they support such a questionable expenditure of their hard-earned money, this is it.

The regularly scheduled municipal election is already set for November.

Adding a referendum question would be a minimal additional cost.

When are politicians going to understand that citizens expect an opportunity to say no to such ill-considered spending?
