Re: Support the arts or risk shunning, Letters, Feb. 23.
It should be a simple case of common sense to anyone, especially if you have a university education, that if you are involved with any group that is unable to support itself, you do not have any basis to claim public support.
It should be obvious to such people that whatever their interest is, it’s not worth much to the public and therefore does not deserve public support.
Tax dollars are collected for municipal purposes, not private interests.
If you want public support, then develop something that appeals to the public and then ask for support. Simple. Otherwise, raise your own support.
This not ancient Greece. Regardless of whatever their lifestyle was, aside from the principles of law it’s totally irrelevant to today’s world.
The public’s tax dollars are high enough for proper municipal projects without the added expense of paying for any group that can’t support itself. Just try raising taxes for these groups and watch the public reaction.
As for being shunned by an intolerant society, I’ve been shunned for less by much, much better and I’m still here.
