Sign intent misconstrued

Re: Pickets loom for VIU profs, March 10.

To the Editor,

Re: Pickets loom for VIU profs, March 10.

On Wednesday, March 9, a protest rally was being held at Vancouver Island University in support of the teachers.

A looming strike at the time caused much heated tension and debate in which I took part.

The next day, a photo of myself holding a sign that said, “Lets Cut Drama and Call it a Day!!” appeared on the front page of the Nanaimo News Bulletin paper and website.

Much controversy has surrounded the photo, in that it detracted away from the real issues present at VIU.

The photo was merely a satirical attempt to show that drama and the arts are always cut first and that cutting a whole university department is ridiculous.

I am very sorry to those who it hurt and offended especially when students are unsure of their future and pressures are high.

I wish that a better picture had been chosen in order to better represent the current situation at VIU.

Most of all, I hope that the strike is resolved quickly and with little negative impact on the students, teachers, staff, and administration at VIU.
