Senate has become an insult to democracy

No one can now rationalize the continuance of our national disgrace, the Canadian Senate.

To the Editor,

No one can now rationalize the continuance of our national disgrace, the Canadian Senate. The last few days have confirmed rampant corruption, abuse of office, ignoring the rule of law, out-of-control Prime Minister Office staff, petty partisan garbage, financial waste, outright fraud and extortion, that embarrass all Canadians.

Abolish that gross insult to our democracy, the Senate, now. It is an embarrassment to the very concept of democracy. It is a disgrace that Canada maintains an appointed legislative body when most of the world finally agrees an assembly elected by the people is the proper way to govern. Our Senate is nothing more than a haven for appointed political hacks chomping at the taxpayer-funded trough.

No real friend of democracy would stop a constitutional amendment abolishing the Senate. Get on with it and save $90 million a year and Canada’s dignity.

In the interim, just fund it $1 per year. Let’s see if any senator stays on the job as a volunteer.
