Revitalization of downtown keeps taking tax dolllars

To the Editor,

It’s been more than 30 years since downtown ‘revitalization’ began.

At this point, let’s call it for what it is: a bloodsucking scheme on the taxpayers’ backs.

Here’s how to save $2 million of our taxes.

First, lease the Port Theatre to a company that can bring in money, not has-been musicians at a $500,000 subsidy a year.

Second, close the Vancouver Island Conference Centre until a hotel is built, saving more than one million tax dollars.

Third, cut all Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association-type ‘revitalization’ grants, saving another half million.

It’s high time these business people ran their own business with their own money.
