Regional district has no business playing train engineer

What I find disturbing here is that once homeowners start dealing with bureaucracy, they always lose, whether it be in time or money.

To the Editor,

Re: Historical project unlikely to get derailed, Sept. 17.

I’ve had the good fortune to have viewed Peter Roosen’s railway and found it truly remarkable.

The Regional District of Nanaimo’s attention to this private railway is petty and not in the community’s best interests. Its requirement for permits is ridiculous. Just a money grab.

The RDN’s assertion of questionable structural integrity of some of the structures is itself questionable. Roosen has made a career in the railway industry and probably knows more about the structures and how to build them than the entire staff at RDN. I doubt the staff are even qualified to judge this railway.

What I find disturbing here is that once homeowners start dealing with bureaucracy, they always lose, whether it be in time or money.
