Re: Recycling a better solution than incinerating, Letters, March 25.
Nanaimo is going to need a place to put our waste in 12 years as the landfill will be closed. Cowichan is presently transporting its waste off-Island. We have lots of waste.
Zero Waste is not “no waste.” Most municipalities in B.C. have endorsed zero waste but they know zero waste doesn’t mean 100 per cent recycling. Some believe it’s possible to create no waste in our society. In the far future maybe. Reality says right now we either put our post-recycled waste into a landfill or into a waste-to-energy facility.
The letter writer mentions serious health concerns with a WTE facility. We only have to look to Burnaby’s WTE plant – iff there were health issues we would know about them. There are none. WTEs are held to the highest emission standards in the world. The Duke Point plant will have $300 million of pollution controls installed.
In 2026 we will run out of room for our waste. This proposal will provide a solution to our waste problems and Metro Vancouver will pay for it. What’s wrong with this picture?
