To the editor,

Re: Council supports rail trail proposal, June 22.

Thank you very much to all Nanaimo city council members who support the idea of converting the E&N rail corridor into a multi-use trail. I want my Nanaimo to attract healthy, active living. Drivers are being asked to share some of our roads with cyclists and these routes should lead to central corridors to more easily get around. The E&N rail corridor is well established in that it is wide and well graded: perfect to accommodate cyclists and pedestrians alike. There are many things to see and do up on Vancouver Island, and tourists find various means of transportation that enable them to travel ‘door to door’ during their visits. This function is not served with a rail service. Transport trucks manoeuvre products from port to facility and back to port very efficiently. This function is also not served with a rail service. The general public really is waiting at the gate to use the rail corridor. I was pleased to learn of Friends of Rails to Trails Vancouver Island, and I will support their efforts to remove the train tracks in any way I can.
