Parking problems turn away beach-goers from Westwood Lake Park

Summer is finally here – camping, barbecues, picnics at the beach, swimming at Westwood Lake. Sounds great, except for the parking fiasco.

To the Editor,

Summer is finally  here – camping, barbecues, picnics at the beach, swimming at Westwood Lake. Sounds great, except for the parking fiasco.

You would think one of the most popular recreational areas in Nanaimo would have adequate parking. I’m sure the neighborhood residents are impressed when all those excess cars spill out onto the streets. It’s been going on for years and it will only get worse. Something as simple as building a larger parking lot should be higher priority than a lot of other questionable purchases by the city. I know of people who won’t go there just because of the parking. My daughter and her 18-month-old baby had to walk down the busy road without sidewalks.

Let’s hope when they finally get around to providing adequate parking they don’t use the same planners as the Long Lake parking upgrade with the fancy grass and curbs. There are actually fewer parking spaces than before.
