Ocean centre would draw tourists

Go for it; do something outstanding for a change

Re: Ocean centre eyes Nanaimo’s publicly owned waterfront, May 18.

I think it is a great idea. The aquarium in Monterey, Calif. is amazing; if I remember, it has a 28-30-foot-high tank, that you can see kelp growing in from various levels of the building.

Go for it; do something outstanding for a change. Build a really good (no money spared) ocean centre, and they will come.

I have a few questions regarding this project. Is this a stand-alone project or is it incorporated in waterfront development that includes walkways, additional condos similar to Cameron Island? Our cruise ship facility is pretty sad. Seems to me this should be a current focus ongoing. Who will be responsible for ongoing maintenance and landscaping? What about parking?

At the end of the day if the admission to this facility is not reasonable the city will be left with a run-down eyesore – then what?

The City of Nanaimo must have signed maintenance and commitment contracts by all developers applying for permits ongoing. Some of our shopping malls are looking sad. Does the city approach the owners about ongoing maintenance ?

Seems to me the city should be letting developers know what is expected prior to permits issued. An example: new housing developments should include small neighbourhood retail outlets that allow more walkable communities and less car dependence.

I would be in favour of this project as long as there is firm and transparent planning available for public viewing.

Head up for the envisaged Ocean Discovery Centre proposal for Nanaimo on the waterfront.

It certainly appears a cost-effective and worthwhile project to attract tourists and cruise ship visitors alike; as well as the educational and interest value to schools, families, and the residents of Nanaimo and beyond.

Good news.
