To the editor,

Nanaimo’s homeless population is growing and with no foreseeable solution in sight, what can we as citizens of the Harbour City do?

Homelessness is an issue that expands across Canada, and lest we forget these are fellow Canadians that have more than likely not chosen the lifestyle they’re carrying out. While strolling downtown, it’s hard not to notice the attitudes patrons have towards these people, and it can be more than appalling at times, but what can we do as a community moving forward?

For starters, to better understand their struggle, try volunteering some time at the Salvation Army or Loaves and Fishes. When passing by on the street downtown, find it in one’s heart to spare a few kind words; words are free and don’t cost the speaker anything, but are more precious than gold to the person receiving them.

Addiction is a complex disease that affects many, and many didn’t ask for the turmoil and hardship that comes with it.

Before belittling words reach one’s lips, trade places with them for a few seconds first, and try to imagine what their life is like on a daily basis. Perhaps try suggesting where they could seek help and observe the ripple effect that could cause.
