Nanaimo needs to grow in order to prosper

If Nanaimo was to double in population there would be a lot of positive changes.

To the Editor,

A place of growth and prosperity, Nanaimo is lively with people from B.C. and Canada and all over North America and we should continue to encourage growth. If Nanaimo was to double in population there would be a lot of positive changes.

A bigger population means improved infrastructure. Stop lights make people want to avoid the city, because frequent stops add time to travel, cause stress and make travellers use more fuel. New overpasses and bridges would mean less congestion on roads and fewer stopping points on the highway.

Not only will commuters benefit, but Nanaimo’s culture will benefit, too. Nanaimo could see a new multiplex built with a new WHL hockey team using it as home base. The arts and culture scene would improve as the new multiplex could also be used for concerts.

Once Nanaimo builds a bigger airfield and port, the downtown core would blossom, and all the new shopping in the south will increase the local economy.  The entire city will enjoy a bigger income, and landowners would appreciate increased land values.

So, an increased population can only be good for Nanaimo – change for the better. Our infrastructure would improve; the city’s culture would be enriched, and increased tourism will enable citizens can enjoy a higher quality of life. Nanaimo would move towards becoming a next-generation city.
