Municipality needs core review

Some years ago, the review was suggested – and summarily rejected by this council.

To the Editor,

The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight is a book that was written some 45 years ago about an incompetent New York Mafia gang. Is this a somewhat reminder of our council and administration?

There seems to be financial announcements with little opportunity to understand. And nothing noted about the massive surpluses hidden in different accounts. What is our financial position ?

To find out our position, an answer is a core review. Some years ago, the review was suggested – and summarily rejected by this council.

An active community group, the Nanaimo Ratepayers Association, is stressing such review and is being ignored. Such review was done in Penticton in 2009, resulting in a reduction of duplication of management from 56 to 31,  an annual saving of $2 million, and no tax increases from 2010 to 2013. Prince George was also successful in this approach.

Nanaimo’s tax percentage increases for the past four years are neither acceptable nor sustainable. Is anybody concerned?
