Meters eliminate any misreads

NANAIMO – Re: Electricity costs jump after meter installed, Letters, Dec. 6.

To the Editor,

Re: Electricity costs jump after meter installed, Letters, Dec. 6.

The smart metering program isn’t just about replacing our old meters with modern technology.

It’s also about updating our billing systems to eliminate accidental misreads due to data entry errors and the need to regularly estimate customers’ bills.

With smart meters, we can also provide customers more timely information about their electricity use. This includes ensuring a bill is based on actual consumption and not an estimate.

Once the new system is in place, customers will receive current information about their energy use on their secure, online B.C. Hydro account and have access to new tools to save energy and money.

Customers on an equal payment plan will also benefit from a monthly cost projections feature – helping to eliminate the guesswork when it comes time to reconcile the account each year.

We have now installed 1.7 million new meters throughout the province. We thank customers for their support and patience as we work to modernize our electricity system and help ensure we continue to safely provide them with electricity they can count on every day.

If people have questions about their bill, we ask they contact us directly at 1-800-224-9376.

We take every complaint seriously and investigate each one thoroughly.
