To the editor,

Re: Wildfire risk should be fresh in our minds in B.C., Editorial, May 15.

Public officials claim they are concerned about the raging wildfires across Canada.

Most are human caused, and yet we never see anyone charged with any crime from their actions causing fires. Clearly no one is serious about fire prevention since perpetrators are rarely, if ever, held accountable. Until you charge fire starters with crimes and they are actually held accountable for their actions, no one will take the issue seriously. In addition to criminal sentences, perpetrators need to pay full and fair compensation for the harm they cause.

Even as we witness the devastation to homes and communities from out-of-control fires, there are negligent smokers across Canada who continue to toss their cigarette butts onto tinder-dry roadsides.

It is long past time for governments at all levels to enforce litter bylaws and legislate smokers to carry and use fire-proof portable ashtrays to safely dispose of their burning debris.

Governments need to direct vigorous law enforcement and the police to strictly enforce the laws that better ensure public safety from fires.

Should any fire occur as a result, diligent arson investigation must be undertaken and perpetrators prosecuted and held fully accountable. This should include full and fair restitution to all victims.
