Letter writer suggests city shouldn't be going ahead with detailed designs and costing of public works yard rebuild right now. (News Bulletin file photo)

To the editor,

Re: City spending on designing public works yard upgrades, Feb. 26.

Nanaimo city council started by asking for approval of $90 million to update the vehicle maintenance yard. Now they are spending $1.8 million on a detailed design. This seems to have the process backwards. Don’t you do the detail design first and then when it reaches the point where accurate costing can be done, you ask for funding approval for that amount?

I understand Nanaimo needs vehicle maintenance facilities. No doubt there are other similar-sized cities that have gone through a similar project recently. Why not look at those plans and costs and find something that can be built without financial or physical surprises? There is no need to reinvent the wheel or create an ‘architectural masterpiece.’ Once the city has a practical design, and a realistic cost figure, it should be much easier to sell this project to taxpayers.

S.I. Petersen, Nanaimo
