Re: Region drafting climate change plan of action, Aug. 14.
Good motion by Coombs-Hilliers-Errington director Leanne Salter wanting more time to absorb the the RDN’s climate change plan of action, as it certainly requires more thought and questions of viability.
Staff’s report to the board contains a burdening amount of popular corporate ‘double speak’ phrases such as “building on existing work,” “maintaining momentum,” “critical risk reduction,” and identifying actions and benefits. Surprised that staff omitted using the corporate favourite, worn-out, agonizing word ‘synergies.’
Did I read right that $2.1 million is needed over five years to implement this, basically a make-work plan, for a seated group of individuals creating more computer-generated models?
Members of the board of the RDN who whole-heartedly endorsed the four motions to proceed need to do a little more critical thinking. The world is presently experiencing two major peerless, escalating, climate-destroying conflicts alongside a multitude of smaller warring conflicts that are no less destructive to the climate in their overall effect.
I have long and repeatedly heard the ‘smooth over’ talk containing few if any concrete take-it-to-the-bank details. Do the talk, get the cash. The walk-the-walk part? Maybe not so much, but ‘be assured we are working on it.’ I worked in the corporate realm of the forest industry during the industry’s demise in the province and heard the same sounding spiels from the so-called experts outlining the plan to sustainability but in the end, all for naught.
