To the editor,

Re: Parking along Island Highway near Nanoose Bay clam beds an accident waiting to happen, Letters, Feb. 11.

Our premier says safety first for our citizens is a responsibility of this government.

Further to concerns of local citizens, including politicians, I have spoken to three mayors, the Nanoose regional director, Ministry of Transportation, DFO staff, the chief of the Snaw-Naw-As First Nation, offices of local MLAs, the parliamentary secretary for transit and multiple concerned citizens. There is 100-per cent agreement that the hazard caused by excessive parking along the Island Highway during clam digging season in Nanoose Bay should be eliminated.

Some favourite options include eliminating recreational clam digging in the area and eliminating parking in the area. Concerns expressed by some are the expense and or that we don’t want to make people unhappy. My opinion is that people get over unhappiness. It is much harder to overcome a serious injury or fatality caused by an accident, especially if it was predicted and preventable.

We have been assured by members of the B.C. government that a meeting is to take place shortly between the agencies in control to address the concern. To the government agencies that I have spoken to, please, for the good of all, put safety first.

H. Hurd, Lantzville
