To the editor,

Re: RDN looking at notion of Nanaimo River park system, Feb. 9.

This is a proposal whose time has definitely come. As demand for outdoor recreation has continued to grow (Nanaimo’s growth rate being twice the national average for metropolitan areas), a Nanaimo River park system is something worth pursuing and supporting.

Besides creating more recreation opportunities, biodiversity is likewise worth protecting and is highest in waterway habitats and along riparian areas. A park system would also contribute to supporting Snuneymuxw First Nation traditional land values, bolster fish habitat conservation, and help protect the river’s ecological, hydrological and drinking water integrity.

Besides partnering with private individuals and non-profits, B.C. Parks’ land acquisition program also partners with corporations (such as Mosaic) to acquire land for parks and protected areas. Perhaps this could be one of the avenues on the way to making this foresighted proposal happen.

I am grateful for local areas such as Morrell Sanctuary, Saysutshun and Mount Benson, all places that were produced from the wise vision of creating parks and protected areas.

Graham Shuley, Nanaimo
