To the editor,

While driving around Nanaimo and area on any given day, I observe a multitude of traffic infractions worth thousands of dollars in voluntary donations (fines), yet I rarely see any vehicles being stopped.

Chaos grows as enforcement wanes, and it is definitely becoming more chaotic out there.

If the RCMP were to assign a few more shifts to the traffic division to enforce the rules related to speed, following distance, signalling, exhaust decibels, painted islands, etc., the collected windfall of citizen contributions could fund community safety efforts and rein in the apparent growth in lawlessness on the road.

Of course, this windfall may only last for a limited time as drivers might get tired of donating so much. However, additional benefits could emerge such as an increasing of awareness for the more ‘enthusiastic’ drivers, and a lowering of driver anxiety, injuries, and insurance premiums.

Jason Jonker-Harms, Nanaimo
