LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Libraries are welcoming and supportive

Libraries are happy to direct visitors to research materials, but then it’s up to the visitors to do that research themselves, says letter writer. (News Bulletin file photo)

To the editor,

Re: Libraries should share knowledge, Letters, Oct. 30.

May I first say that I am sorry that the letter writer has experienced a lack of support from our local libraries. I would like to suggest that he establishes for himself one branch that may become, what mine is to me, a ‘home away from home.’

As the letter writer frequents ‘his’ branch he will be aware how, like many businesses in Nanaimo, there is a lack of staff, making the workload quite intense for all employees. If someone has specific questions or research, I have found that they will be directed to where they might find the answer to their questions. But that research is up to the visitor, not the staff.

I have spent decades using my ‘home away from home’ branch and have felt very well supported with my own needs and with the needs of many young children I have had the pleasure of taking to the library’s special events. I have had the chance to get to know the staff and mourn with them the recent loss of one of the special ones.

I always feel welcomed and supported. And I encourage the letter writer to take the time to get to know the staff in ‘his’ branch and work with that staff to get direction to help solve his questions.

P.A. Giovando, Nanaimo
