To the editor,

Re: City’s downtown is under attack, Letters, Jan. 25.

I just want to add my voice to the letters that have already been written about downtown Nanaimo. We have one of the most beautifully situated downtowns on the Island. Steeped in history, a gorgeous waterfront steps away, an interesting harbour, and islands and parks worth visiting close by. It is a travesty that it has become such a scary place for many.

I certainly don’t have any answers as to how it can change so it becomes a vibrant, charming downtown core that people want to visit but I do want to applaud the businesses that continue to stay despite the challenges, and their patrons who continue to support them.

Nanaimo is certainly not alone in its downtown struggles but we need to find a way to revitalize this lovely downtown so we can all be proud of where we live. It has been too long.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Drug-fuelled crime shows need for solutions

To the editor,

Re: City’s downtown is under attack, Letters, Jan. 25.

To answer one of last week’s letters, yes I’m afraid the city is all set to plunk the new bus exchange right smack downtown. We need to yell and scream so the city won’t build it on the old In-Print and Black and Blue Tattoo site and take away that parking lot we all use now to go to the Queen’s and other businesses in the area. After the big announcement within the next couple of months, there won’t be any good and safe lots to park in that area of downtown.

City council, stop this nonsense. We filled out your surveys and told you to knock it off. City of Nanaimo, you are the real ones killing the downtown – and us. Stop it.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Lift people onto their feet so that they can join workforce

To the editor,

Re: Nanaimo’s crime severity a cause for concern, Dec. 28.

I am still very much concerned. The question is, when will our elected civic politicians finally take real action in order to deal with the very serious problem of these prolific offenders? Or will it just be the all-too-familiar all talk and no action?

Reversing the current situation will require a group effort, not just the continued usual lip service.

Al Munro, Nanaimo
