To the editor,

Re: Proposed 24-storey highrise moves to rezoning process, July 10.

How distressing to see this article. A 24-storey highrise in the downtown area, on Chapel Street? Surely, council will not approve this rezoning application, requesting an increase to the maximum building height from 19.8 metres to 78.5 metres. This is beautiful, scenic Nanaimo, not Vancouver.

I don’t care if the building is “elegant,” quoting Coun. Diane Brennan. And while I also recognize we “need about another 5,000 doors downtown to really make a difference in the vibrancy and liveability of our downtown area,” this is not the way to do it. This will not be a good addition. Other developments have come into the downtown, and there is room for a lot more, without the rezoning being changed to allow highrises of this magnitude.

If this is approved, it will only be the beginning of the end.

Lori Daniels, Nanaimo
