Most businesses are managing to stay open as construction work continues in downtown Nanaimo. (Chris Bush/News Bulletin)

To the editor,

Given the hardship being caused to businesses in the downtown core I respectfully ask council to consider:

Instructing council and city staff to at least one day of the week support a local downtown restaurant or other business in the construction zone.

I don’t know if any council members are or have ever faced the challenges of operating their own business but paying rent to try and operate in basically a war zone must be challenging beyond challenging.

It would be not only a good photo op for this council to back up their talk about reimagining downtown by putting their money where their mouth is, it would be just the right thing to do.

If every member of council and all city staff bought lunch downtown at least once a week, I am sure the local businesses would appreciate it greatly.

Jim Taylor, Nanaimo
