To the editor,

As a proud Nanaimoite now living in Tbilisi, Georgia, I witness hybrid warfare every day. While Canadians may think this is something distant – happening in Eastern Europe or the United States – it is already here in Nanaimo.

Hybrid warfare is not traditional war, but a strategy used by countries like Russia, China, India, Iran, and even the U.S. to influence minds, divide communities, and weaken democracies from within. It uses disinformation, cyber tactics, economic pressure, and psychological operations to sow distrust and make people lose faith in their own country.

I have seen it first-hand in my own friends: A kindergarten friend from Rutherford who once loved Canada now echoes Kremlin-backed narratives. A high school friend from Dover Bay regularly shares content from a Russian state-controlled media outlet. This is happening to people I grew up with – which makes me wonder how deep Russian influence has already gone.

With Canada’s next election approaching, we can be certain that hybrid warfare will be in full force. Foreign actors will target vulnerable people, using fear and outrage to manipulate them. Whether it’s disinformation about the economy, immigration, or national security, the goal is always the same: Make Canadians distrust their own institutions, turn us against each other, and weaken Canada’s ability to stand up for itself on the world stage.

How can Nanaimo fight back? Be aware. Understand that outside forces are actively trying to manipulate your views. Question sources. If a claim seems extreme, ask where it’s coming from and who benefits. Avoid emotional traps. If something makes you angry or hopeless, pause. Disinformation is designed to provoke reactions, not inform. Strengthen community ties – we must choose unity.

We do not want Nanaimo – or Canada – to become a zombie yes-man to foreign powers. We must defend our minds, our families, and our democracy. Stay informed. Stay critical. Stay Canadian.

Barrett Nash, Tbilisi, Georgia
