LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Downtown Nanaimo dependent on traffic flowing

City of Nanaimo also needs to make downtown safer for it to thrive, says letter writer

To the editor,

Re: Construction set to start on Terminal Avenue upgrades, June 21.

The city’s pie-in-the-sky dream of forcing everyone onto a bus or a bicycle is causing our downtown to choke and die. The city has blocked off streets, narrowed roads and is about to take away more much-needed parking for a new bus exchange.

Street criminals have already taken over and laid siege to our city centre and with less vehicles there will be less people venturing around downtown to shop and keep businesses alive. And don’t say there will be more foot traffic, because most Nanaimoites are afraid to walk through what has become a very dangerous city core.

City of Nanaimo politicians and bureaucrats need to keep our traffic flowing, keep the bus station where it is and remove those causing trouble. That’s when our downtown will thrive.

M.G. Renauld, Nanaimo
