To the editor,
Re: City looking at options to expand free parking, Oct. 30.
Instead of the City of Nanaimo adding more free parking downtown, with taxpayers paying the bill for those spots, point the finger at city staff for not doing their homework and realizing there are mine shafts under Commercial Street.
Since Sept. 3 our main street has been blocked off. And since the beginning of October, work has been stopped because of the shafts.
Now construction equipment and supplies sit idle behind the fences and mom-and-pop businesses struggle to survive during what should be a busy Christmas shopping season.
The city has literally become the Grinch who stole Christmas from downtown.
John Franklin, Nanaimo
