To the editor,
I don’t think anyone would dispute that the downtown core has deteriorated in the past few years and anyone can see that there is quite an effort underway to improve roads and pedestrian facilities in this area as well as others in the older parts of the city.
As active seniors, we love walking the waterfront along the harbour and I really enjoy the friendliness of the old core. However, we have become increasing depressed by the filth of the sidewalks along Commercial and especially around the library. It might inspire new businesses and more visitors there instead of the endless malls. This core plus the walkways along the harbour to Maffeo Sutton could use the benefit of a regular weekly crew to work these areas. They are the signature of the beauty of Nanaimo for any tourists.
Would it be possible to sandblast these areas or use some other technique, possibly even assign a regular ‘scouring crew’ for graffiti and walks?
Restore pride.
Carol and Myo Feagan, Nanaimo
