To the editor,
Re: City considering ‘socially responsible’ investments, July 17.
I applaud city council’s recent decision to explore ensuring that at least part of its investments be directed to socially and ecologically responsible companies. The mayor’s argument against, citing how investments in drug companies that produce birth control pills would be offensive to some, seems a bit wide of the mark. I don’t think the other councillors are advocating for investing in pharmaceutical firms. I think the idea is not to have city invest in tobacco companies, arms manufacturers, mining companies with deplorable human rights records, or companies that make use of forced labour. I personally think this would be a step forward and would reflect well on the city. It would also be in line with city’s commitment to the doughnut economics framework.
