The City of Nanaimo has approved a plan that would involve eliminating all of Commercial Street’s curbs and making the space more versatile with what the city is calling call ‘flex zones.’ (City of Nanaimo image)

To the editor,

Re: Council likes Commercial St. redesign plan, June 29.

I’m baffled why our local government is spending up to $14 million (likely more with the inevitable overruns) on ripping up and reinstalling sidewalks downtown when there are so many residential streets with no sidewalks at all. Strikes me as another example of throwing our taxes at pies-in-the-sky rather than attend to the basic and pragmatic.
