To the editor,
Re: City decides on $90-million works yard rebuild option, July 31.
Here we go again. The City of Nanaimo is again attempting to muzzle the electorate of Nanaimo with the proposal to use the AAP to borrow $90 million for a half fix at the Nanaimo public works yard. Is there a need for a makeover at the public works yard? No doubt. The yard looks like some of our schools with a number of portable bunkhouses cobbled together. The issue for myself is the lack of opportunity for the people to debate in open public meetings of city council and the democratic right to vote.
It is ironic a city for which it is nearly impossible to get a building permit has been given, by the current provincial government, a method to fast-track municipal projects. One could say at least the City of Nanaimo had construction happening with the aid of the tax dollar. In the meantime a tax paying citizen can wait six or eight months for a simple deck repair. The people of Nanaimo deserve better.
Brian Evans, Nanaimo
