To the editor,

Re: Start by providing warmth, Letters, Feb. 12.

It is with dismay and regret I read some in our community want more of my tax money to go towards those who have gotten hooked on hard drugs. I have fought my demons, worked hard, live a law-abiding life but now I am faced with barely enough to live on. Who’s helping me?

I have spoken with many on our streets when I go for a walk and buy my meagre amount of groceries. Most need much counselling in a mental health, psychiatric or involuntary care facility, not just a cup of coffee. The violent ones, who rob, assault and do break-ins must be put behind bars.

Nanaimo is a caring community, but I and my fellow seniors and residents must be and feel safe. We require and demand the extra community safety officers and RCMP constables to patrol our city.

In Nanaimo, the point-in-time count says 515 people were unhoused. The 2021 Statistics Canada numbers point to 28,170 elderly citizens in Nanaimo who are over the age of 65. There is a lot more of us struggling but we are not seen and hardly have anyone writing letters, crusading and advocating for us. We require and demand compassion and help at the end of our life span.

Moira Woods, Lantzville
