Dry grad might need a re-think

To the Editor,

Re: Dry grad desperately short volunteers, June 2.

I admit to a bit of puzzlement arising from your story about Nanaimo’s dry grad being in danger of cancellation. While it has been a few years, I remember my daughter’s dry grad. The ‘tradition’ was for the Grade 11 parents to provide the support necessary for a successful party, the graduates being understandably reluctant to have their parents overseeing the party.

Nevertheless the school community provided more than ample ‘person-power.’ If there are 1,000 grads then there is at least a 1,000 parent resource pool from which to draw. Given the crying need for other community supports that don’t have this type of built-in resource, if the parents can’t be bothered then maybe it is time to re-think this mega-party and return to more reasonably sized school-based functions.
