Decision of five deprives next generations

NANAIMO – Re: Council approves demolition of dams, May 16.

To the Editor,

Re: Council approves demolition of dams, May 16.

Because of five city councillors my grandchildren will not be embraced by the cool, moist air which once wrapped me.

Because of five, they will not see the  mystical views of the clouds settling over the lakes and throughout the forest. The moonlit water shimmering as it ripples from the paddling ducks and the fish splashing to reach for their supper.

Because of five, they will not touch or see the soft moss which wraps the bark of the tree whose roots are sculpted into art.

Because of five, they will not have the thrill their parents had with seeing the owl flying, or the otter and beaver being right by your side. Nor will they hear their echoing giggles when the water tickles their toes as they reach for a stone to skip.

Because of five, they will not have this sanctuary, a place to rest their worries, a nature’s masterpiece to cherish for their children.

Please forgive but never forget.

It was not a disease, a fire, a wind or an earthquake which destroyed the life that thrived because of the Colliery dams.

It was  the choice of five humans.
