Dam not Nanaimo’s only quake concern

NANAIMO: Re: City plans to remove two century-old dams, Nov. 1.

To the Editor,

Re: City plans to remove two century-old dams, Nov. 1.

I am sure the Colliery dams have withstood several earthquakes such as those in 1947 or 1948.

But what about Westwood Lake’s earth-filled dam, or how about the huge houses on the hill above Hammond Bay Road?

If you look at the steep slope above Pipers Pub, how many buildings will survive an earthquake of eight on the Richter magnitude scale?

Why not reduce the water level by taking out the upper dam and leave the Collery dam alone?

There are other options other than destruction.
