City must spend prudently on Colliery dam remediation

To the Editor,

Re: Dam remediation moves forward, July 17.

This article was misleading because it suggests that two very solid structures need a great deal of remediation. However, what is more disturbing is that both city senior staff and one councillor appear to suggest that the city should be spending between $7.2 million and $8.1 million dollars to do this remediation when the Colliery Dam Park Preservation Society indicates that whatever remediation may be needed can be done for less than half that amount.

Councillors and senior staff should remember that it is their duty to spend prudently because it is our money and not theirs they are spending. If $200,000 more is needed for further evaluation, this would be well worth it.

When I was a senior public servant, this is the kind of recommendation I would have made to my political masters and one wonders what has happened to the senses of Nanaimo’s senior staff.
