To the Editor,
Re: Driveways no place for plowed snow, Letters, Jan. 15.
Just a short note to add to Rod Hancock’s comments.
I understand his frustration about getting plowed in after putting so much effort to keep his driveway clear. To orientate the plow blade would work on streets with driveways on one side. But not on most streets.
I have spent many years in northern Saskatchewan, Alberta and B.C., and there is a cheap and effective way to avoid the plowed-in driveway.
Equipment is available to attach to the trailing edge of the plow. One is a gate or blade that will close off the end of the plow by air or hydraulic control from the cab. This is enough to avoid a patch of six metres from getting plowed-in.
Another method is a drop or wing blade that drops down at every driveway. It’s a very simple solution. If the City of Nanaimo did an Internet search, it would find that out.
As a volunteer firefighter, I have been frustrated when spending so much effort to keep my driveway clear so I can respond to a fire or MVA, but am unable to because the city has plowed me in again
Also, as a first responder, I was dispatched to a medical call to find an elderly man in cardiac arrest because he tried to clear his own driveway.
